Lane's two goals hand Quakers first conference loss

RICHMOND, Indiana -- Grace Lane scored both goals Sunday in Kenyon College's 2-1 road win at Earlham College. The road win keeps Kenyon in prime position near the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference standings while also handing the Quakers their first loss in NCAC play.

The Quakers started the scoring in the 11th minute off a penalty corner. Off the corner, Earlham's Molly McKellar passed the ball to the top of the shooting circle to Denise Bergoldt. Bergoldt's one-timer went through the Kenyon defense and past Payton Doan to the back of the cage. The Ladies answered the Quakers' advantage two minutes later. Fresh off a pass from Sarah Metzmaier, Grace Lane maneuvered her way into the shooting circle. Lane beat two defenders before juking another to create space for her shot. The first-year forward placed her shot perfectly to find the back post, tying the game at one.

Three and a half minutes into the second quarter, the Ladies filled the circle when the loose ball ended up on the stick of Lane. This time Earlham goalkeeper Meg Murphy stopped Lane's shot to keep the score tied. The Ladies continued to press forward looking to take the lead. With seven minutes left before halftime, Lane intercepted a Quaker pass and moved toward goal. The Chelsea, Michigan native beat five defenders and the goalkeeper to give her team a 2-1 advantage before the half.

The two goals in the first half proved to be all the Ladies needed in the game. The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle as neither team registered a shot. In the fourth quarter, the only two Quaker shots came in the first minute and a half of action. Kenyon blocked both of these shot attempts to retain their separation. Looking for the hat trick, Lane shot once again, but her attempt went wide. Lane filled the stat sheet as she accounted for all four Ladies shots.

The Ladies return home after a successful weekend road trip for their final two home conference games. Kenyon takes on Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday at 4:30 before matching up with Oberlin College at 4:30 on the 27th.
