Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Kenyon nets big win over Wooster

GAMBIER, Ohio -- As the regular season winds down, the Kenyon College women's soccer team built a strong case for postseason play based on Wednesday's important 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over The College of Wooster Fighting Scots.

Both teams entered the game with 2-1-1 records. The result moved Kenyon to 3-1-1 (6-7-1 overall) and  into a tie with Oberlin College for second place in the NCAC standings. Wooster's updated 2-2-1 record (7-7-1 overall) dropped the Fighting Scots into a tie for fifth place in the standings. At the end of the regular season, only the top four teams in the NCAC standings advance to postseason play.

With three games left on its schedule, Kenyon moved a step closer to gaining one of those four spots with a single goal scored in the 71st minute by first-year Julia Igoe.

When a handball was called on a Wooster defender, the Ladies set up a free kick on the left flank, about 25 yards away from the Fighting Scots' goal. Junior Chloe Webb sent the ball down the left sideline for senior Samantha Hayes. She then sent a pass into the box, to the near post. Igoe fought for position there, gained control of the pass from Hayes and spun around to take a shot, which trickled over the goal line near the far post.

That goal was Igoe's first of her collegiate career. The assist was Hayes' first of the season. Paired with her three goals this year, Hayes now has seven points, a total that is tied for second-best on the team.

Throughout the game, Wooster came up with more offensive opportunities. The Fighting Scots had 13 shots, seven on goal, compared to the Ladies, who had nine shots, four on goal. The Fighting Scots also held a slight 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

At the back end of the Kenyon defense, junior goalkeeper Leah Anderson made seven saves to post her sixth shutout of the season.

Up next for the Ladies is another home conference contest. It's slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Hiram College Terriers (2-14-0, 0-4-0 NCAC).
