Ladies take Bishops to brink in season finale

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Searching for their first conference win of the season, the Kenyon College volleyball team nearly earned it Wednesday night against Ohio Wesleyan University. The visiting Battling Bishops, however, controlled the fifth set and escaped Tomsich Arena with a 21-25, 25-11, 25-13, 20-25, 15-6 win.

The match was the final one of the season for the Ladies, who ended up with a 2-17 overall record and an 0-8 North Coast Athletic Conference mark. On the other side of the net, Ohio Wesleyan improved to 11-12 overall and 5-3 in NCAC play.

Kenyon began the match on the right foot, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Senior Lauren Limbach had four kills in the set to lead the way. Two of her kills came at a crucial time late in the set, as the Ladies broke away from a 19-19 tie to record the 25-21 win. Limbach finished the match with 10 kills.

Ohio Wesleyan, which made 10 attack errors in the first set, reversed course and made just six errors combined while winning the next two sets. The Battling Bishops hit .381 in their second-set win and then .273 in their third-set win.

Now trailing 2-1, the Ladies made the proper adjustments in the fourth set. They swung at a .270 rate with 13 kills and just three errors. Paige Milhon was the go-to hitter in that set, as she pounded down five kills without an error. The Ladies trailed 12-10 in the set, but a Milhon kill sparked a 4-0 run that ended up giving Kenyon the lead for good.

The win forced a deciding fifth set, but momentum escaped the Ladies. Ohio Wesleyan whipped up the first four points of the set and then went on to build leads of 6-2 and 11-4 before putting Kenyon away.

Overall, Macy Reimbold and Milhon tied for the team lead with 11 kills apiece. Milhon also had four blocks, giving her a final season total of 79. Reimbold's Wednesday output gave her a team-best 185 kills for the season.

Jac Cousineau added 20 assists and 10 digs to the Kenyon totals, while Maya Sapsford and Ellie Luciani chalked up 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
