Lords’ run game tramples Terriers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Piling up 269 rushing yards on 44 carries, the Kenyon College football team closed out the 2021 season Saturday afternoon with a 21-16 victory over the Hiram College Terriers.

The Lords averaged 6.1 yards per rush and cranked out a ground-game total that was their best since they racked up 272 rushing yards against Hiram in the third game of the 2015 season.

Jack Provenza, a junior, led a trio of backs for the Lords, who completed the season at 3-7 overall and 3-6 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. Provenza ran 16 times, gained 126 yards and scored one touchdown. Another junior, Sean Goodman had seven carries for 77 yards, while Drake Lewis, a first-year, rang up 76 yards on 17 carries.

With the run game operating like a well-oiled machine, the Lords didn't need to go to the air that often. Senior quarterback A.J. Allen finished the game 9-of-21 for 98 yards and two touchdowns. His two scoring strikes went to junior Andrew Schnarre, who caught five balls for 83 yards.

The teams moved the ball up and down the field during a quick first half, but turnovers and other miscues kept both the Lords and Terriers out of the end zone. Kenyon senior defensive back Niall Regan picked off the Terries in the end zone, halting a long, first-quarter drive that spanned 14 plays and 62 yards. On the Lords' second possession, the Terriers returned the favor, picking off Allen at the four-yard line.

The only score of the first half came on Noah Murry's 30-yard field goal that gave the Terriers a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter.

It wasn't until the 9:23 mark of the third quarter that Kenyon finally broke through. An eight-play, 62-yard drive was capped by Allen's first scoring strike to Schnarre. It covered 33 yards and gave the Lords a 7-3 advantage.

Junior linebacker Jason Kessler scooped up a Hiram fumble on the next set of downs and set up Kenyon for another scoring drive. This time the Lords took 11 plays to go 64 yards. The last 16 yards of that drive were covered by another Allen to Schnarre connection for six.

Hiram crept a little closer in the final seconds of the third quarter. A 47-yard pass from Jacob Simmons to Raequan Davis-Hereford made the score 14-10 heading into the final frame.

At the 11:07 mark of the fourth quarter, Provenza broke off a 28-yard scoring scamper that put Kenyon ahead, 21-10. Hiram answered with another touchdown, but followed with a failed two-point conversion. From there, the Lords stayed with their strong running game to help run out the clock.

Kenyon finished with 367 yards of offense and Hiram finished with 378, a total that included 111 yards on the ground and 267 in the air.

Davis-Hereford wound up with 172 receiving yards on 11 catches for the Terriers. Simmons went 20-of-40 with two touchdowns and Gabriel Hoskins led Hiram in rushing with 54 yards on 16 attempts.

Defensively, Mychael Leno and Jimi Bello were atop the Kenyon chart with nine tackles apiece. Kessler had eight and Ryan Mott had seven.
