Cougars' hot shooting sinks Ladies

GAMBIER -- Despite scoring the opening points of the game, the Kenyon College women's basketball team fell to Mount Vernon Nazarene University, 89-54. Grace Connery led the Ladies with 18 points followed by Katie Orefice adding in 15.

Orefice started the night off by hitting the game's first jump shot 30 seconds into the game. The Ladies held on to their two point lead until the Cougars hit a three-pointer to take the lead. Mount Vernon Nazarene remained in the lead for the remainder of the game as they finished the first quarter with a 27-12 lead.

The Cougars used the second quarter to extend their lead as they shot 50% from three-point range. In the period, Connery scored eight of the Ladies' 16 points in the quarter. Orefice added six of her own in the quarter after she nailed a couple of jumpers and converted her two free throws. Mount Vernon Nazarene stretched their lead to 50-28 after Erin Boehm made a three-point shot with under a minute to play in the quarter.

Coming out of the break, the Cougars continued to shoot the ball well. Maggie Coe scored 10 of her game-high 21 in the third quarter. Mount Vernon Nazarene used a 13 point run to stretch their lead to a game high 36 points. Madelyn Anderson hit a shot from deep to start working the lead down. After three quarters of play, the Cougars led the Ladies 71-36.

The Ladies started to find the offense in the fourth quarter. After an 8-0 Cougars' run, the Ladies rattled off a 15-5 run of their own. During the run, Anderson, Connery, and Orefice all made three-point shots. Greta Propp added in a bucket of her own during the streak. Katie Sprang made two free throws with less than a minute to go to arrive at the final score, 89-54.

The Ladies travel to Greencastle, Indiana to take on DePauw University for their first conference game of the season. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
