Ladies fall in NCAC semifinal game

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After defeating Ohio Wesleyan University twice during the regular season by identical 1-0 scores, the script flipped on the Kenyon College field hockey team during Tuesday's semifinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

The visiting Battling Bishops, the tournament's No. 4 seed, upended the No. 1-seeded Ladies, 1-0, on the Field at Benson Bowl.

The game's lone goal was scored with 7:20 showing on the second quarter clock. Off a restart from the left side, Ohio Wesleyan's Zoe Nelson fired toward the right post of Kenyon's goal. Before it got there, Allie Crawford crashed in from the right side, met Nelson's pass and redirected it into the back of the Kenyon cage. It was Crawford's team-best sixth goal of the season.

At the other end of the field, Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Meg McCarthy made six saves to earn the shutout. She was a key part of the upset, as Kenyon outshot Ohio Wesleyan 10-2. Kenyon also had a big 6-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Kenyon's best chances to tie the game came off the stick of Sarah Metzmaier. In the third quarter, following a penalty quarter, Metzmaier ripped a shot that was blocked just in front of the goal line. In the fourth, following another corner, a back-handed shot from Metzmaier was turned aside by McCarthy.

The Ladies kept the pressure on throughout the final seconds. A shot from Grace Lane, off of another penalty corner, was blocked. As time expired, the Ladies earned one final penalty corner. Metzmaier loaded up again, but McCarthy was there for the save. The rebound bounced to Bella Kern, but her follow-up shot went wide of the right post.

The loss ends the Ladies' season with a 13-5 record. Ohio Wesleyan, which improved to 9-5, will face Denison University in the NCAC's championship game on Saturday. Denison outlasted Earlham College in the other semifinal game, which needed to be decided via a shootout.
