Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Starters shoulder the load in Ladies’ first win

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's basketball team took high-percentage shots Saturday and relied immensely on its starting five to pull out an 83-77 home victory against Muskingum University. The win was the first of the season for the Ladies, as well as the first for Grace Elliot as Kenyon's head coach.

Three Kenyon starters played all 40 minutes, while the other two played 39. Those five consistently worked the ball down low, resulting in a season-high 45.5 shooting percentage (30-of-66). The Ladies refrained from taking a bunch of three-pointers, but did go 3-of-12 from long range to keep the Muskies guessing.

Kenyon's work at close-range yielded 50 points in the paint, as well as 16 Muskingum fouls, which the Ladies turned into a 87.0 percent showing (20-of-23) at the free throw line.

Additionally, the Ladies posted a season-low nine turnovers.

Katie Orefice pumped in a career-high 28 points for Kenyon, which moved its record to 1-5. The junior guard shot 10-of-21 (47.6 percent) from the floor and 8-of-9 (88.9 percent) at the free throw line. She also grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists.

Sophomore Claudia Cooke turned in the second double-double of her young career, ringing up 18 points and amassing a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior Greta Propp nearly had a double-double, as well, but fell just short with nine points and eight rebounds.

Rounding out the Kenyon starters' scoring spree were Madelyn Anderson and Grace Connery. Anderson had 16 points and six assists, while Connery added a dozen points and three steals.

Although things eventually came together, it took a moment for Kenyon to get on track.

Muskingum, now 4-2, canned 6-of-10 three-point attempts and sprinted out to a 26-18 lead after one quarter of play. The last three quarters, the Muskies were just 2-of-12 on three-point attempts.

Kenyon pulled closer in the second quarter with Connery burying a trio of three-pointers. Orefice scored six in the frame and Cooke tallied eight points, including six straight that tied the game at 33-33.

At the half, Muskingum was clinging to a 42-41 lead.

In the third quarter, Kenyon went up by as many as nine points and took the game into the final quarter with a 63-58 lead.

On three different occasions in the fourth quarter, Muskingum cut its deficit down to three points. The last of those three instances came with just 26 seconds left. Kenyon, holding a 78-75 lead at the time, made five of its last six free throw attempts to close out the win. Anderson went 4-of-4 at the line over those final seconds.

Kenyon gets right back at it tomorrow with a 2 p.m. home game against Earlham College.
