Ladies' defense smothers Quakers in 77-35 win

GAMBIER -- After defeating Muskingum yesterday, the Kenyon College women's basketball ended the month of November with a 77-35 win over Earlham College on Sunday. The Ladies improve to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Earlham drops to 0-4 on the season.

In the opening minutes of the game, the Quakers started the game with a 4-2 lead. Kenyon tied up the score and took the lead on a pair of Claudia Cooke layups. Including the two buckets by Cooke, the Ladies finished the quarter on a 23-4 run.

To start the second, Bridget Molnar extended the lead with a jump shot in the paint. The Quakers continued to try to come back but the Ladies scored 11 straight points to stop Earlham's momentum. Heading into halftime, the Ladies led the Quakers, 43-20.

The Kenyon defense came out of the break and locked down the Earlham offense. In the third quarter, the Ladies held the Quakers to six points on 1-15 shooting in the quarter. Cooke scored six of the Ladies 13 points in the third quarter.

The Ladies started the final quarter with back-to-back three-point shots from Grace Connery to stretch the lead to 62-26. Earlham scored their first bucket of the fourth quarter when Megan Helmkamp made a jump shot with 7:43 to go. Down the stretch, the Ladies continued to hit their shots. Raine Hammel scored her first bucket of the season when she nailed a three-pointer to give her team a 75-33 lead. The Quakers made a jumper with just under a minute to go, but Hammel made a layup as the clock ticked down to cap off the scoring.

Cooke secured her third double-double of the season while scoring a game-high 19 points and pulling down a leading 14 rebounds. Other Ladies in double digit scoring were Grace Connery (16), Katie Orefice (13), and Madelyn Anderson (11). Bridget Molnar racked up 11 rebounds in the win.

The Ladies return to conference play on Wednesday when they host Wittenberg at home. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Tomsich Arena.
