Lords overpower Wabash in NCAC semifinal

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Six different Lords scored in the Kenyon College men's soccer team 8-0 victory over Wabash College in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) semifinal matchup. The eight goals broke the NCAC tournament record for goals in a match previously held by the 2019 Kenyon team in their 5-1 win over Oberlin.

In the 5th minute, Mac Nardiello-Smith placed a cross on the back post. As Wabash goalkeeper Michael Bertram came off his line, Scott Upton headed the ball into the back of the net to give his team an early 1-0 lead. Aidan Burns buried a free kick into the top corner of the goal from 19 yards out in the 28th minute. Just over a minute later, the Lords added on to their lead when Burns threw a long ball into the box to Scott Upton. Bertram saved Upton's header, but Atli Hrafnkelsson cleaned up the loose ball. At the break, Kenyon led Wabash 3-0.

Minutes into the second half, Scott Upton found Sam Carson on a perfectly timed run down the middle of the field. Carson drew Bertram off the goal line and put the ball away to the far post as he secured a 4-0 advantage. In the 51st minute, Sebastian Gaese flicked a pass around his defender to find Carson down the sideline. The senior forward finished the play the same way he finished his first goal. Atli Hrafnkelsson scored his second goal of the match in the 60th minute when Luke Muther placed a ball down the sideline for Sam Carson. Carson's centering pass found the foot of Hrafknkelsson who tapped the ball in for the Lords' sixth goal. In the 63rd minute, Sebastian Gaese broke loose and controlled the ball around Bertram to set up a wide open net for the game's seventh goal. Alem Duratovic capped off the scoring in the 71st minute off a pass from Charlie Penzone

The Lords host the winner of tonight's Denison University and Ohio Wesleyan University semifinal on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament championship.
