Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lords edged by Big Red in NCAC finale

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Denison University men's soccer team scored a first-half goal Saturday and made it stand for a 1-0 win over host Kenyon College in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game.

The win moved Denison, the tournament's No. 3 seed, to 12-4-2 and gave the Big Red the conference's automatic berth into the upcoming NCAA Division III Tournament. Kenyon, winner of the NCAC regular season title and the tournament's No. 1 seed, dropped to 15-2-1 with the loss.

The Lords, five-time winners in the previous six NCAC Tournaments, saw their unbeaten streak halted at 16 games and their win streak stopped at 15. They will now await word from the NCAA on Monday regarding their possible inclusion in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Denison scored the game's lone goal by chance. In the game's 22nd minute, Kenyon goalkeeper Jack Pedreschi booted a clearing pass from the top of the Kenyon box. The pass was intercepted by Denison's Cameron McIntosh, who took one step forward and fired at the Kenyon net, while Pedreschi was trying to get back in position. McIntosh's shot, from about 35 yards out, found the right side of the Kenyon net, as a diving Pedreschi was one step too late to get to it.

That shot was one of just eight for the Big Red, who witnessed Kenyon whip up 22 shots, as well as a huge 11-2 margin in corner kicks.

The opportunities were plentiful for the Lords, especially in the second half, but they just couldn't capitalize. In the second half alone, Kenyon unleashed 15 shots. A header from Sam Carson that started the barrage, sailed just inches over of the crossbar in the game's 61st minute. About two minutes later, Sebastain Gaese had a great look, but his shot was turned aside by diving Denison goalkeeper Dylan Brown.

The Lords continued to apply pressure, but just couldn't break through. In the game's 75th and 77th minute, Johan Johannsson and Alem Duratovic put shots on goal, only to be denied by Brown again. Three minutes later, Mac Nardiello-Smith put a header on net, but a Denison defender was in the right place at the right time and headed it away.

Kenyon had three corner kicks and one more shot in the game's final eight minutes, but could not make them count.

At the conclusion of the game, Carson, Sam Hosmer-Quint and Atli Hrafnkelsson were named to the NCAC's All-Tournament Team.
