Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lords drop a close one to Quakers

RICHMOND, Ind. -- Trailing by as many as a dozen points, the Kenyon College men's basketball buried long range shots Saturday to earn a second-half lead against Earlham College. The host Quakers, however, survived one final Kenyon three-point attempt and walked out of Druley Performance Gym with a 75-73 non-conference victory.

Kenyno sank three-pointers at a rate of 53.8 percent (7-of-13) in the first half. Juan Sergio Matabuena led the way, connecting on 3-of-4, while David Mazon drained both of his three-point attempts.

Despite the hot shooting, the Lords never held a first-half lead. Earlham's Jaden Terry pumped in 13 first-half points and the Quakers, as a team, were 8-of-12 at the free throw line. Those numbers resulted in a 42-36 halftime advantage for the home team.

When the teams returned to the floor, Kenyon went right back long-range shooting. Sergio Matabuena and Alex Boyd opened the half with back-to-back treys that pulled the Lords within two points. About a minute later, Sergio Matabuena dropped in another long ball, giving Kenyon its first lead, 45-44, with 17:30 still to play.

Earlham briefly reclaimed the lead, but over the next 12 minutes Kenyon held the advantage. It wasn't until there was 2:44 left on the clock that the Quakers caught the Lords at 66-66.

From there, the teams went back-and-forth until back-to-back buckets from Terry and Josh Ozanne gave Earlham a four-point edge with less than a minute remaining. Ozanne later converted a pair of free throws to push the lead to five, but Mazon answered with a three-ball for Kenyon.

Earlham, which was 21-of-27 at the line, made just two of its last four free throws, opening the door for Kenyon. The Lords got a coast-to-coast layup from Miles Versa to close within one. Then, following the last Earlham free throw, Sergio Matabuena heaved another three just before the buzzer went off. His shot, however, just missed, bouncing off the front rim, the backboard and then the front of the rim again.

Sergio Matabuena ended up 5-of-10 from three-point range and led the Lords with 19 points and eight rebounds. Boyd, Mazon and Nick Lewis all finished with 11 points for the Lords, who were a season-best 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from long distance.

Terry led Earlham with 32 points. He, alone, was 13-of-15 at the free throw line. Kenyon, as a team, was 8-of-14 for the game.

The Quakers moved to 3-6 with the win. Kenyon fell to 1-9 and will prepare for its final game of 2021, a 2 p.m. home contest on Monday against Waynesburg University.
