Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Lucien Kisch

Gators rely on Roberts to deal Lords a loss

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- It took a supernova performance from junior Brian Roberts for the Allegheny College Gators to hold off the Kenyon College men's basketball team, 84-80, in a Saturday afternoon thriller. Roberts scored 43 points, including going 17-of-19 on free throws, to will the Gators to victory.

The first half stayed tight the whole way through, with neither team leading by more than six points and the lead changing hands eight times. The Gators got off to a quick start, going up 10-4 to kick off the game. The Lords hung tough, never letting their deficit stretch any further and taking the lead themselves with 13:57 left in the half on an Anthony Testa trey.

The contest continued to seesaw from there on out. Every time one side pulled ahead, the other one would respond with a bucket of its own.

As the half drew to a close, Kenyon erased a four-point deficit when Max Belt hit a mid-range jumper and Gefen Bar-Cohen followed it up with a driving layup that tied the game, 38-38, at the break.

The Gators were lifted by strong free-throw shooting during the half, going 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. For Kenyon, strong bench play was a key, with the Lords reserves outscoring the Gator backups 25 to 11.

Allegheny (4-4, 2-0 NCAC) started the second half hot, quickly going up 47-40, its largest lead of the game. The Lords then responded with a 12-5 run to tie up the game, punctuated by a big three-pointer from Juan Sergio Matabuena

Later, with the score tied up 67-67, Kenyon went on a 7-0 run to take its largest lead of the game. The Gators, however, immediately went on a 7-0 run of their own to knot things up once again at 74-74.

With less than a minute left to play, Allegeheny's Luke Barker hit a big trey, assisted by Roberts, to put the Gators up 80-78. Nick Lewis responded for Kenyon with an impressive and-one layup through traffic, but he missed the free throw, allowing the Gators to regain possession.

Roberts was then able to seal the game for the Gators by making four free throws in the final seconds.

Sergio Matabuena led all Kenyon scorers with 16 points, making four three-point shots, and also had a team-high 10 rebounds. Miles Versa, Dylan Fuerst and Lewis also all scored in double figures for the Lords. Versa pitched in four assists to lead the team in that department.

The Lords (0-7, 0-3 NCAC) will continue to hunt for their first win of the season on Tuesday, when they host Grove City College. The game tips off at 7 p.m.
