Ladies pull away in fourth quarter to secure win

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Kenyon College women's basketball team earned their first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win of the season with an 81-67 victory. Four out of the five Ladies' starters reached double digit point totals.

Katie Orefice led all scorers with 23 points while Claudia Cooke followed with 22 of her own while hauling in 10 rebounds. Orefice recorded her second double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds. 

After falling behind 5-0 to start the game, the Ladies rattled off 15 unanswered points to erase the deficit and take the lead. Once gaining the lead, Kenyon held on to the lead the rest of the way. With less than 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Claudia Cooke made a jumper in the paint to give the Ladies an 11 point lead. Allegheny made a bucket before the quarter ended to make the score 24-16.

In the second quarter, the Gators tried to cut into the Ladies' lead. Allegheny forced six Kenyon turnovers in the quarter while forcing defensive stops, but Kenyon continued to score points. The Ladies held a 34-27 lead going into halftime. 

After the break, the Ladies and Gators exchanged baskets to keep the contest close, 38-32. Over the next two minutes, neither team scored until Allegheny's Alexis Caldwell made a lay up. Following the lay up, Kenyon increased the distance to 11 points on a Katie Orefice's lay up. With 52 seconds left in the third quarter, Emily Lauer scored on a lay up while drawing a foul. Lauer went on to hit the free throw and moved the Gators to within one. 

As the Gators looked to tie or take the lead, the Ladies scored a season-high 30 points in the fourth quarter. Kenyon started the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run fueled by Grace Connery hitting three baskets from deep. With 2:54 left in the game, Claudia Cooke scored on another lay up to put the Ladies up 68-58. Down the stretch, Kenyon outscored Allegheny 12-4 to secure the victory. 

The Ladies (3-6, 1-2 NCAC) return home to face Denison University on December 11th at 1 p.m.
