Lords overcome slow start to top Tigers

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team kicked off the 2021 campaign Saturday at Wittenberg University. The visiting Lords needed about a quarter of play to smooth out some rough edges, but once stabilized they rallied from four goals down to register a 14-12 victory.

Wittenberg (0-2) capitalized on Kenyon's slow start and raced out to a 3-0 lead after eight minutes of play. It wasn't until the 4:55 mark of the first quarter that the Kenyon offense finally broke through on a goal from Jack Giuffre, who was assisted by Declan Curry.

From that point on, those two, along with Weston Powell, set the tone for the Kenyon offense. Guiffre, a sophomore, led the charge with six points on four goals and two assists. Powell, a junior, tallied three goals and two assists, while Curry, also a junior, rang up two goals and one assist.

Following Giuffre's first goal, Powell set up Joe Boesel on Kenyon's second score. Giuffre tacked on another after that, but Wittenberg matched the Lords for the rest of the quarter and maintained a 4-3 advantage.

The host Tigers started the second quarter with a man-up goal, one that sparked a three-goal run and boosted the lead to 7-3 with 12:10 remaining in the first half.

Now facing their largest deficit, the Lords reacted with a four-goal blitz that tied things up, 7-7, at the half. Kenyon's rally spanned a little less than four minutes and included goals from Curry, Powell, Mike Matteo and Giuffre.

Despite the turn of events, the Lords still couldn't take over the lead. The two teams traded goals for the early stages of the third quarter. The Tigers fired in another man-up goal to take a 9-8 edge, but Kenyon answered again, this time in a more forceful manner than in the second quarter.

Back-to-back man-up goals from Giuffre and Powell gave the Lords their first lead with 5:56 showing on the third quarter clock. The surge did not stop there. Kenyon whipped up three more goals, building a 13-9 advantage within the first few minutes of the fourth quarter.

Wittenberg twice pulled with two goals late in the game, but a final Kenyon score from Matteo went a long way in sealing the win.

Both teams uncorked 40 shots and both scored a pair of man-up goals. Kenyon racked up quite a few penalty minutes in the physical contest, but the team's man-down defense answered the call, holding the Tigers to just those two man-up goals in 10 extra-man opportunities.

At the back end of the defense, senior goalkeeper David Metzger made eight saves for the Lords (1-0), who will now prepare for their home opener next Saturday against Ohio Wesleyan University.
