WOOSTER, Ohio – After taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Kenyon College, The College of Wooster softball team kept pouring it on Sunday, piling up 36 runs at home in another doubleheader sweep of the Ladies. Wooster rolled to a 29-1 win in Sunday's first game and then finished off the series with a 7-1 victory in game two.
There was no stopping the Wooster offense in game one. The Fighting Scots amassed 26 hits and benefitted from six walks and six Kenyon errors. They scored once in the first inning, four times in the second inning and then put up back-to-back 12-run innings in the third and fourth.
Among the hit leaders for Wooster were Brooke Swain, Emmalee Cooke, Katie Agatucci, Olivia Johnson and Anna Norby. Swain, the Fighting Scots' leadoff hitter, went 5-for-5 with five runs scored. The other four in that group all had three hits apiece. Johnson, Norby and Molly Likins each blasted home runs for Wooster, which had a total of nine extra-base hits in the game.
Kenyon managed just four hits off of Johnson, Wooster's starting pitcher. Two of those four hits came in the fourth inning, when
Clare McMahon led off with a double to right center. A groundout from
Bella Albrecht moved McMahon to third.
Emily Pater then singled to plate McMahon for the Ladies' lone earned run of the day.
Kenyon's two other game-one hits came off the bats of
Tori Rogers and
Kathryn Riggs.
Rogers opened up game two as Kenyon's starting pitcher and it didn't look like the Wooster bats were going to show any signs of slowing down. The Fighting Scots opened the first inning of play with three hits and capitalized on another Kenyon error to score three unearned runs.
Although Wooster did eventually tally seven runs off her, Rogers was steady. Only one of those seven runs was earned. Rogers did yield 10 hits and walk, but also struck out two.
Agatucci did most of the damage for the Wooster offense in game two. She went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Likins added a 2-for-4 performance that included two runs scored.
Wooster tacked on two more runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead, but Kenyon answered and avoided the shutout with a run in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Albrecht got on base and advanced to second via a Wooster error. Pater then stepped up and laced a single up the middle to score Albrecht.
Pater finished the game 2-for-3 with the one RBI. In addition to the error, Albrecht also reached base with a hit and a walk. The Ladies' other game-two hit came from Riggs, who had one knock in each game.
The losses drop Kenyon to 0-10 overall and 0-8 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. In the other dugout, Wooster improved to 14-6 overall and 9-3 within NCAC play.
