HIRAM, Ohio – A late-inning 9-3 victory in game one propelled Kenyon College (6-6) to a convincing 6-1 win in game two on Saturday against Hiram College at Proverbs Park. The doubleheader sweep evened the Lords' record at 6-6.
GAME ONE
Kenyon led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. However, the home squad tied it up and sent the game into an extra inning where the Lords scored six unanswered to claim victory.
Leading up to the late frames, the Lords got ahead 3-0 after four innings.
In the second, a
Jimmy Clark grounder to third caused an error and
Kyle Dwyer made his way home. That miscue extended the inning and resulted in a two-out RBI double from
Jake Brown in the very next at-bat.
Two innings later, Kenyon benefited from another Hiram error, this time off the bat of Brown. That sequence, which brought
Ayden Head home, pushed the Kenyon lead to 3-0.
Hiram then fought back to tie the affair. In the sixth, David Paus drove in Cody Wilson with a two-out RBI single to second base. The Terriers' second run was the result of an error at first by Kenyon.
Then in the bottom of the seventh, Hiram found the tying run. Kyle Adams was hit-by-pitch to start and a few batters later, Wilson singled through the right side to score his teammate.
Tied 3-3, the Lords wasted little time recapturing the lead. Dwyer, the first at-bat in the eighth, smoked a shot past the right-field fence, his second homer this season.
That blast sprung Kenyon to three more run-scoring hits from Clark,
Will Sturgeon and
Brent Henderson. Additionally,
Andrew Rabinowitz drew a bases-loaded walk and Kenyon scored its ninth run after another Hiram error.
By game's end, Sturgeon, Henderson and Dwyer each had three hits and pitcher Pat Craig earned the win by tossing a complete game, allowing two earned runs while fanning seven.
GAME TWO
Sam Richards and
Zach Elsawy combined to give up just one unearned run while notching seven strikeouts in a 6-1 game-two victory. Offensively, Rabinowitz and
Ryan Page each collected three hits.
Hiram led 1-0 after two frames before Kenyon closed the last three innings strong.
In the fifth, the Lords got ahead 2-1 courtesy of a couple of hits with two out. Following Rabinowitz's single to third, Dwyer followed with a single of his own scoring Sturgeon. Hiram changed pitchers at the point but it didn't matter as Head connected with a two-out double to left field plating Rabinowitz.
Up 2-1, Kenyon scored three more in the sixth. Page got that inning's efforts going with a single up the middle that scored two. A couple sequences later, an error allowed Page to score.
Then in the final inning, Henderson's RBI single moved the scoreboard to 6-1 Lords.
Richards earned the win for Kenyon by scattering nine hits while fanning four. His defense helped him with a combined 12 groundouts and flyouts. For Elsawy, he pitched the final 1.1 innings and gave up just a hit while registering three strikeouts.
This coming Tuesday, the Lords will close their season with an NCAC doubleheader at Allegheny College.
