GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College used great defense and pitching in game one to earn a doubleheader split against Hiram College on Sunday. The Ladies won the opener 2-1 before falling 11-1 in the second contest.
GAME ONE
Junior
Emily Pater's performance in the circle in game one played a huge part in the Ladies (1-17) earning a 2-1 victory against the Terriers.
She tossed a complete game, induced a combined 14 flyouts and groundouts and allowed just one run. In fact, after a first-inning sacrifice fly to Mariah Sheffield, Pater and the Kenyon defense kept the visitors off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
After the first-inning Terriers run, Kenyon rallied back to take a 2-1 advantage in the third.

Paige Milhon led off the third with a single to right. A couple batters later,
Bella Albrecht doubled, moving two runners into scoring position.
Pater then cleaned things up with a two-bagger of her own to left center, giving Kenyon a 2-1 advantage.
Over the rest of the game, Kenyon's defense really turned it up. In the sixth, Albrecht turned a double play when there were two on base for the Terriers.
A frame later, Pater helped turn a double play by getting a bunt into her glove and subsequent throw to first. Hiram did follow with two singles from Leah Valdez and Giselle Bahena, however, Pater ended the threat by inducing a popout.
GAME TWO
Hiram rebounded with 11 runs on 13 hits in the second contest. In the circle, Jeskari Rodriguez tossed four innings, did not allow a run and fanned five batters.
Bahena started the game with a home run to left field before Hiram increased its lead to 4-0 in the third.
In that inning, Angel Santellan connected with an RBI double before Meaghan Stafford added a sacrifice fly. The three-run inning was capped off by Rebekah Lewan's two-out RBI single.
For Kenyon, it was shut down by Rodriguez who was perfect after three innings. The Ladies did not get on the scoreboard until the home half of the fifth.
At that point, Hiram held an 11-0 lead after scoring a half-dozen in the top of the fifth.
The Ladies' lone run of the game came off the bat of Milhon who drove in senior
Kathryn Riggs with a double to right center.
For Riggs, who got the final out in the previous game, it was her final games in a Ladies uniform.
