No. 15 Denison edges Kenyon in NCAC Championship

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Kenyon College (6-1) gave a valiant effort but ended up falling 12-10 to No. 15 Denison University on Saturday in the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship at Piper Stadium.

The Big Red improved to 8-1 and earned the NCAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament with the victory.

Kenyon got strong performances on both ends of the field. Joe Boesel led the team with five points on three goals and two assists. Declan Curry added two goals and two assists while Ethan Dewbrey and Mike Matteo combined for five goals. In goal, senior David Metzger tallied a season-high 19 saves.

Denison scored the game's first three goals about six minutes into the championship bout before Kenyon responded.

Matteo got the purple and white going as he scored his 12th goal of the year with 5:30 left. About three minutes later, Boesel fed Dewbrey who fired from the right side into the upper corner. The Lords' equalizer was then delivered by Curry, who scored unassisted at 2:12.

The second stanza was a bit tougher offensively for Kenyon, in large part because of Denison goalie TJ Spahn who notched six saves. Kenyon also had a few turnovers and only tallied one goal in the period. That came to Boesel at 13:17. By the halftime whistle, Denison led 7-4.

After the break, the Big Red's defense turned things up a bit. They forced the Lords into three shot-clock violations and turned that into good offense. Two goals in the final 26 seconds from Ethan Tyack pushed the home team's lead to 11-6.

Despite the five-goal deficit, the Lords made things really interesting in the fourth.

A little over eight minutes in, Curry started a three-goal run with another unassisted goal. A few minutes ticked by before the Lords tallied another score.  At 3:17, Matteo passed to an open Dewbrey and 27 seconds later Dewbrey scored again from just outside the crease.

That goal, though, turned out to be the last for Kenyon. On the next face-off, Denison's Davis Cronin won it and following a couple of turnovers, time ran out.

Denison ended up out-shooting Kenyon 46-32 and had a 32-15 ground balls advantage.
