Panthers spoil Ladies’ season opener

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Two early goals from Maggie Day, a Hanover College senior, set the tone for Wednesday's season-opening soccer game, as the visiting Panthers defeated the Kenyon College Ladies, 3-0.

Day's first goal hit twine about 12 minutes into the contest. From the left side of the box, she picked up a loose ball with her back to the Kenyon net. She then spun around to her left and placed her shot perfectly past a diving Erika Freiberg, Kenyon's goalkeeper, and into the right side of the net.

Six minutes later, Day struck again, this time capitalizing on a Kenyon error. She stepped in front of a pass intended for a Kenyon defender, streaked through the Kenyon zone and fired a shot from the top of the box that sailed over Freiberg's head and under the crossbar.

Before the teams could make it to the half, Hanover struck again. At the 28:52 mark, Kelsey Hughes took a shot that Freiberg saved. The rebound came back to Hughes, who worked the right side of the box. From there, she chipped a crossing pass in front of the goal mouth, where it was met and booted into the net by Jostin Reeves.

Hanover outshot Kenyon 10-4 in that first half, but, after that slow start, the Ladies played the Panthers more evenly. In the second half, Hanover held just a 10-9 advantage in shots, bringing the final game total to 20-13. Five of Kenyon's nine second-half shots were on target and saved by Amanda Carmosino, who played the final 45 minutes in goal for Hanover.

Maggie Hinegardner, who played the first 45 minute in goal for the Panthers, made two saves and earned the win. Freiberg wound up with four saves in 45 minutes of work, while Leah Anderson played the final 45 minutes for Kenyon and made six saves.

The Ladies can put this one behind them and now focus on a busy weekend ahead. Friday, they'll host Alma College and Saturday they'll entertain George Fox University. Both those games are slated to start at 5 p.m.
