Calvin offense overwhelms Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The powerful offense of the Calvin University Knights kept rolling along Friday evening, as it claimed the Kenyon College Ladies as its most recent victim in a 6-2 women's soccer game at Mavec Field.

The Knights played two previous games and scored four goals in each of those contests. To date, the Calvin team, now 3-0-0, has outscored its three opponents, 14-3.

The Calvin trio of Elizabeth Williams, Sophie Mueller and Talia List did the heavy lifting Friday. Williams scored twice and assisted twice, Mueller scored twice and assisted once, and List scored twice.

Williams was the first to strike, hauling in a Mueller assist and ringing up the game's first goal about 13 minutes from the start.

After that first score, the Kenyon offense took its turn. Working off a corner kick, the Ladies evened things up just one minute after the Knights first scored. Chloe Webb, a junior, took the corner and fired it toward the far post, where it was met by senior Samantha Hayes, who headed it into the back of the Knights' net.

While things seemed even at that point, the Calvin offense went on to dominate the rest of the game. Williams and List both scored before the break, giving Calvin a 3-1 advantage at the half-way point.

When play resumed in the second half, Williams set up Mueller for another goal, which made it 4-1 with roughy 40 minutes left to play. Then in the 56th minute, Mueller struck again, notching her sixth goal of the season. With less than five remaining, List tacked on the final Calvin goal.

Before the final horn sounded, Kenyon tallied its second goal of the game, it came off the foot of sophomore Sadie Gould, who worked the ball away from a defender and uncorked her shot from the right corner of the box.

Overall, Calvin outshot Kenyon, 21-12. The loss dropped the Ladies' record to 1-3-0, but they'll try to turn things around quickly when they host Transylvania University tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
