Ladies fall in battle with Pioneers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon women's soccer team fell in a close match Saturday night at home against Transylvania University, 2-1.

Both teams came out strong in the opening minutes before Transylvania's Abby Baker put one just past goalkeeper Leah Anderson to open the scoring. The Pioneers would lead 1-0 as Kenyon tried to counter.

The counter would come in the 34th minute when junior Chloe Webb sent a corner kick into the box. As the ball came in, senior Olivia Dion headed the ball down in between three Transylvania players. First-year Morgan Baker took the ball off the bounce and put the ball in the back of the net off the volley. This leveled the score at 1-1 with halftime looming.

Minutes before halftime the Pioneers' Meredith Campbell controlled an errant pass by the Ladies and passed the ball forward to Rachel Green. Green spun to the inside and shot just outside the 18-yard box. Anderson dove to her left, but the slow rolling ball curved into the post and went into the opposite side netting. This gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Both teams battled in the second half, but could not find the back of the net.  Kenyon would get a good look off the foot of Dion in the 59th minute but Transy goalkeeper Morgan Patton made the diving stop maintaining the one goal differential. The Ladies would get a few more looks, but Patton stayed strong.

The Ladies wrap up their six game home stand on the 15th against John Carroll University. Kick off is at 5 p.m.
