Ladies suffer shutout in home opener

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The visiting Centre College Colonels improved their record to 3-0 by registering a 3-0 win over the Kenyon College field hockey team Saturday morning on The Field at Benson Bowl.

It was the first home contest of the season for the Ladies, who dropped to 1-2 following the shutout.

Centre controlled play on both sides of the field for the majority of the game. The Colonels outshot the Ladies, 21-3, and posted an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners. One of the three shots that the Kenyon offense did manage was blocked by a Centre defender. The other two sailed wide of their target.

The Colonels scored the first of their three goals just a few seconds before the first quarter came to a close. After a shot by Kate Pilcher was saved by Kenyon goalkeeper Payton Doan, the rebound bounced back out to Olivia Broyles, who fired it into the Kenyon cage.

Goal number two was scored three minutes into the third quarter. Shelby Young worked the right side of the circle and swiped her shot into the opposite corner of the goal.

The game's final goal came from Meredith Wickenheise, who scored two minutes into the fourth quarter. A long pass from the left found Wickenheise in the circle, she collected the ball, dribbled past one defender and, as Doan came out of the goal to stop her, she fired her shot into the lower right corner of the cage.

Doan played all 60 minutes and wound up making nine saves for the Ladies.
