Ladies fall to Otterbein in three sets

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team opened the doors of Tomsich Arena on Tuesday for their first home match of the 2021 campaign. The visiting Otterbein University Cardinals, however, spoiled the home opener, posting a 3-0 win over the Ladies.

The final set scores were 25-18, 28-26, 25-9 in favor of the Cardinals, who won their sixth straight contest and improved their season record to 7-2. One the other side of the court, the Ladies slipped to 2-5 with the loss.

Senior Elyse Davidson had a good night for Kenyon. She scored a team-high seven kills to go along with a .375 hitting percentage, as well as a couple of blocks. Macy Reimbold, a junior, added six kills and six digs, while classmate Jac Cousineau contributed nine assists and eight digs. Ellie Luciani and Katie Howard also racked up eight digs apiece for the Ladies.

Kenyon held its own for a while, but Otterbein always seemed to have the right response. In the first set, the Ladies used a Davidson kill followed by two Otterbein errors to pull within 9-8. After that, however, the Cardinals scored seven of the match's next eight points with three of those points coming on kills from Morgan Hartman, who led all players with 17 kills for the match. Kenyon moved within five points a couple times, but that turned out to be the final margin in the set.

In the second, the teams traded blows. Otterbein struck first with a 5-0 rally that led to an 8-5 lead. Kenyon countered with a 4-0 run that gave the Ladies a 12-11 lead. The Cardinals stormed back and claimed a 21-14 advantage, but the Ladies chipped away and two kills from Reimbold helped knot the contest at 24-24. Otterbein then capped things off with kills from Hartman, Amber Greely and Julia Vermilion.

From there, the Ladies were running on fumes and the Cardinals used an 11-0 run in the third set to roll to victory and put the match away.

Following Hartman's 17 kills, Otterbein got 11 from Greeley and seven more from Vermilion.

The Ladies were originally scheduled to take on Capital University on Thursday, but that match was put on hold due to some COVID-related issues with the Crusaders team.
