Ladies drop two on final day of Invitational

DELAWARE, Ohio -- As a last-minute fill-in at the Ohio Wesleyan University Bishop Invitational, the Kenyon College volleyball team had a hard time keeping up. A 3-1 loss to Anderson University on Friday was followed up on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to No. 20 Transylvania University and a 3-1 loss to Defiance College.

Things started out well against Defiance in what was Saturday's second match for Kenyon. The Ladies held the Yellow Jackets to just five kills, while producing 15 of their own in the first set. Mary Hester came up huge for Kenyon, smacking down seven kills with no errors in nine attempts. Her last two kills helped the Ladies squeak out a 25-22 set win.

From there, however, Defiance (2-6) turned things around and won the next three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-22, 25-21. The balanced attack of Mackenzie Benham, Kaylynn Wellman and Jamia Murray led the way. Benham had a team-best 10 kills, while Wellman and Murray had eight each.

Hester finished the match with 14 kills for Kenyon, but it was Macy Reimbold who led all players with 15 kills. Jac Cousineau racked up 29 assists, while Ellie Luciano recorded 26 digs.

Earlier in the day, the Ladies had the tough task of taking on the nationally-ranked Pioneers, who improved to 7-2 with the 25-19, 25-10, 25-12 victory.

The Ladies grabbed an early lead in the first set against Transylvania, but that would be the only time, throughout the match, that the Kenyon women held a lead. The Ladies opened with a 3-1 advantage and later held on to a 4-3 edge. After that, the Pioneers went on a 7-2 run to pull ahead 10-6. The Ladies never got closer than three points the rest of the set.

The second and third sets were decided early. Transylvania raced out to a 10-1 lead in the second set and an 11-3 lead in the third set.

Overall, the Pioneers piled up 43 kills in the match, while Kenyon managed 25. Transylvania's Cate Scheper led all players with 11 kills Reimbold was Kenyon's leader with seven kills. Cousineau had 13 assists and Katie Howard racked up 10 digs.

The Ladies, now 2-8, continue a long road trip that lasts five more matches with the next one scheduled for Tuesday at Ohio Northern University against the No. 8-ranked Polar Bears.
