Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cardinals sink Ladies in soggy soccer game

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- For the first time in four games, the Kenyon College women's soccer team yielded more shots than it took. Amid a steady rain on Wednesday night, the Ladies were outshot, 16-8, and fell to the host Otterbein University Cardinals by a 2-0 final.

In their previous three games, the Ladies outshot their opponents by a combined total of 69-22. Wednesday, however, the Ladies had the script flipped and the shutout loss dropped their season record to 3-5-0. On the other side of the field, Otterbein, winner of five straight, improved to 5-1-0.

In a scoreless first half, the teams looked like they were just trying to adjust to the wet conditions. Otterbein outshot Kenyon 8-4, but only one of those 12 shots was on goal. That shot came about four minutes into the game. It was taken by Otterbein's Bailey Zanella and saved by Kenyon goalkeeper Leah Anderson.

It wasn't until about eight minutes deep into second-half play that Otterbein broke through. Lauren Alley drove toward the goal along the right end line. She then centered a pass that was met by Delaney Earl in the middle of the Kenyon box. Earl immediately drove her shot into the upper right corner of the Ladies' net.

A little more than 20 minutes later, Earl and the Cardinals tacked on an insurance goal. This time a ball sent into the box was tapped forward by Sydney Walker. Earl, again, was in the right place to collect the pass and, from the right side, unload her shot under Anderson, who was diving to her right.

The Ladies will put the loss behind them and now turn their attention to Saturday's game, their first North Coast Athletic Conference contest of the season. They'll host the Allegheny College Gators at 1 p.m.
