Ladies route Gators in conference opener

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's soccer team defeated Allegheny College 4-1 at home Saturday in their North Coast Conference opener.

Kenyon started the match hot and didn't let up on the attack as four different Ladies scored in the game. Kenyon opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Samantha Hayes took the ball down the sideline before crossing into the box. Olivia Carriero put a good touch on the ball, but an initial save by Allegheny goalkeeper Kari May stopped the shot. Carriero followed her shot as she put the ball in off the rebound.

In the 33rd minute, Olivia Dion dribbled down the sideline before cutting into the 18-yard box. Dion sent in a cross right in front of May and connected with Lara O'Callaghan who put the ball away. The Ladies retained their 2-0 lead over the Gators into halftime.

After a corner kick went long, Jackie Thompson chased down the loose ball looking to send the ball back towards the goal. Thompson's centering pass deflected off of a defender right onto the waiting foot of Samantha Hayes. Hayes ripped the shot into the back of the goal, giving her team a 3-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Just a few minutes later, Morgan Baker sent the ball into the box off a Kenyon free kick, but an Allegheny defender cleared the ball toward the Ladies' bench. Thompson collected the ball from there and sent in another cross looking for Hayes. Hayes missed the header, but the ball went off the back of her defender and to Sadie Gould. Gould buried the ball into the net, capping the Kenyon scoring. Allegheny scored a goal in the 85th minute, but the Ladies' defense held strong the rest of the way.

Kenyon visits Wilmington College for a non-conference matchup with kickoff set for 7:00 on Tuesday.
