Lewis, Lane power Lords to Homecoming victory

GAMBIER, Ohio -- A steady dose of Drake Lewis on offense and Jimmy Lane on defense proved to be the right combination for the Kenyon College football team, which held off the Oberlin College Yeomen and notched a 24-21 Homecoming victory.

The win was the first of the season for the Lords, who moved to 1-3 overall and 1-2 within North Coast Athletic Conference play. On the other side of the result, Oberlin slid to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in NCAC action.

Offensively, the Lords continued to have problems running the ball, but when it counted Lewis came through. The first-year running back had just eight yards on six carries, but three of those carries concluded in the end zone, helping Kenyon rally from an 11-point second-quarter deficit.

Defensively, Lane, a senior linebacker, had a monster game. He forced two fumbles and racked up a game-high ten tackles, one of which stopped Oberlin during a crucial fourth-and-six play with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

Before the Kenyon team came to life, Oberlin controlled a good portion of the first half. The Yeomen intercepted the Lords on the goal line during their first drive and then marched 99 yards the other way. On the 10th play of the Oberlin drive, quarterback Chris Allen Jr. connected with Christain Arnold for an 11-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 Oberlin lead.

Kenyon's response was a Rocco Danese 29-yard field goal that kicked off the second quarter of play. Those points, however, were quickly nullified by Oberlin, which took it's next drive 79 yards. The final play of that drive was another Allen Jr. to Arnold connection, this time on a 35-yard scoring strike.

The Lords had to punt on their next possession, but started to gain momentum after that. With 9:06 left before the halftime break, the Kenyon men put together a 13-play, 92-yard drive that was capped off with Lewis' first touchdown, a run from three yards out.

A botched punt on Oberlin's next drive set up Kenyon with a short field. The Lords took full advantage, logging a one-yard touchdown run from Lewis in a fourth-and-goal situation. That gave Kenyon it's first lead and one it would not relinquish.

In the third quarter, Kenyon tallied Lewis' third touchdown, a run from five yard out that gave the Lords a 24-14 lead. In the fourth, Oberlin crept a little closer, scoring seven on one more Allen Jr. touchdown toss. This one was to Brandon Davis from four yards out with just 3:24 left.

Kenyon went three-and-out on its next possession and punted the ball away. Oberlin, however, failed to threaten down the stretch. Facing a fourth-and-six with 1:51 left, the Yeomen completed a pass to Maurice Wickware, but when Lane came up to hit him, it left Oberlin a yard short of the first down. Kenyon took over on downs and ran out the remainder of the clock.

Overall, the Lords had 317 yards of offense with 69 yards on the ground and 248 through the air. Quarterback Ryan O'Leary was 15-of-30 for 210 yards. He also ran for a team-high 30 yards. Andrew Schnarre had four receptions for 89 yards and Finn Murray had three catches for 69 yards.

Oberlin produced 401 yards of offense with 125 rushing yards and 276 passing yards. Allen Jr. finished the game 22-of-36 for 276 yards and the trio of touchdowns. He also led the Yeomen with 72 rushing yards. Arnold was the team's top receiver, hauling in eight passes for 107 yards.

Next up for the Lords will be a conference road game at Allegheny College, a team that is 1-3 overall, 0-3 in the NCAC, and coming off a 28-19 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University.
