Ladies stumble against Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's soccer team came up short against Wilmington College 1-0 Tuesday night.

The Ladies got their first opportunity in the opening minutes of the game when Olivia Carriero's corner kick went over the head of a couple Kenyon players in the box before Wilmington cleared the ball. Kenyon saw their best look of the first half come in the fourth minute when Samantha Hayes sent a centering pass to the middle of the box toward Olivia Carriero. Carriero shot quickly, but a diving stop by Wilmington goalkeeper Lauren Galloway kept the score at 0-0.

The two teams went scoreless until the 11th minute when Wilmington's Maddie Scott sent a bouncing pass forward to Heidi Edens. Edens took a shot off a bounce from 20 yards out, over the head of Leah Anderson and into the back of the net.

Coming out of halftime with a 1-0 lead, Wilmington looked to extend their advantage when Elizabeth Miller headed the Quaker corner toward the goal, but Leah Anderson made a diving save to keep the game within one. In the 60th minute, Olivia Carreiro dribbled the ball down the in-line before taking a shot from a tight angle. Wilmington's Galloway came up big with a diving stop to preserve her team's lead.

With less than five minutes left in the game, the Ladies gained possession near midfield and sent the ball upfield to Samantha Hayes. Hayes made a move on her defender and spun to the outside. After a few steps, the senior forward came within inches of tying the game at one when her shot from 25-yards out beat Galloway but hit the post.

The Ladies return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to Springfield, Ohio to take on Wittenberg University at 4 p.m.
