Ladies blank Tigers in non-conference contest

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Ladies won their fourth field hockey game in a row, taking down the DePauw University Tigers 2-0 on Sunday. It was not an easy win for the Ladies, but timely goals from their top two goal scorers, Sarah Metzmaier and Bella Kern, and a strong five-save performance from goalie Payton Doan helped them hold on for the victory.

The game was tightly contested from the first minute to the last. The first half set the tone for an intense battle, with each team taking turns on the attack and defense.

Not much separated the two sides until the start of the second quarter, when Metzmaier fired in her team-leading fifth goal of the season to catapult the Ladies to a 1-0 lead. That score held through halftime, despite an onslaught of shots late in the second quarter from the Tigers.

The third period began with DePauw on the offensive. The Tigers got a lot of good looks and consistently kept the ball on Kenyon's half of the field. That shifted around halfway through the period, as the Ladies began to put more pressure on the Tigers' defense and began to look like the side in control. The Ladies took four shots during the period, but ended up with no goals to show for it.

The fourth quarter saw continued back and forth between the two sides, with neither defense breaking down under continued attack.

Kenyon finally gained a golden opportunity after earning a penalty corner with only two minutes left to go into the game. Kern took the corner and set up a shot for Metzmaier that was saved by DePauw goalie Allie Duranceau. Isabella Meneguzzi was able to get a shot off of the rebound, but once again Duranceau knocked the ball away.

Following that second rebound off Duranceau, Kern was able to regain possession right in front of the goal and took a strike that found the back of the net, ensuring a 2-0 victory for the Ladies as the clock wound down and the game drew to a close.

Next up for the Ladies in their quest for five straight wins will be The College of Wooster. The Fighting Scots will be traveling to Gambier on Wednesday with the non-conference affair kicking off at 4:30 p.m. on The Field at Benson Bowl.
