Ladies push past Scots with second half goal

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College field hockey team earned a non-conference home win over The College of Wooster Wednesday night by a score of 2-1.

The Ladies pushed the tempo early by putting numbers in the shooting circle. Kenyon forced two saves from Wooster goalkeeper Zoe Semersky on three shots. While Kenyon put the first shots on goal, it was Wooster who found the back of the cage with less than a minute to go in the first quarter. The Scots brought the ball into the shooting circle when Syd Schuster found Caitlyn O'Connor on the backside of the cage. O'Connor tapped in the ball for an easy 1-0 lead.

Kenyon came out in the second quarter looking to equalize the score. After an errant Wooster pass, the Ladies' attack pushed forward. Sarah Metzmaier split the two defenders covering her and forced Semersky to come out of the cage, leaving Bella Kern wide open. Metzmaier made the pass to Kern who put the ball away and levelled the game. The two teams went to halftime tied at 1-1 with Kenyon holding a 5-1 advantage in shots.

Just under two minutes into the third, it was Metzmaier who ripped a shot trying to take the lead but a pad save stopped her attempt. The senior forward continued to pressure Wooster until the 35th minute when she scored the go ahead goal. Her shot from just a few feet inside the shooting circle skipped past Semersky and banged into the cage.

In the fourth quarter, the Ladies' defense continued to stop any Scots attack. Wooster forced a couple penalty corners, but Kenyon shut down any chance the Scots could get.

The Ladies start conference play at home on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Allegheny College.
