Bruins rally to double-up Ladies

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Everything started out well for the Kenyon College women's soccer team Saturday evening at Mavec Field. An early goal, however, didn't hold up and the Ladies wound up dropping a 2-1 decision to the visiting Bruins from George Fox University.

About seven minutes from the start, a George Fox defender tried to clear the ball out of the zone. The attempt, however, was stopped by Sadie Gould, who collected the ball and dribbled to her right. She then dropped a short pass behind her for Olivia Dion to collect. Dion immediately took the shot at the top of the box and lofted it over the outstretched arms of Bella Salazar, the George Fox goalkeeper.

That goal was the first of the season for Dion and the fourth of her career.

At the 33:05 mark, the Bruins broke through. A great pass slotted from left to right by Katlyn Martinez hit a streaking Sarah Davenport, who squealed through two Kenyon defenders and beat Kenyon goalkeeper Erika Freiberg to her left side.

The score remained tied for the next 54 minutes of play. At that point, the Bruins got a little help in scoring what would be the game-winner. The play unfolded when a George Fox forward broke loose deep on the right side of the Kenyon box. She attempted a crossing pass to one of two teammates standing in front of the goal, but the ball was intercepted by a Kenyon defender, who, falling backward, tried to clear it. Instead, the ball was misplayed and ended up in the back of the Kenyon net.

Kenyon got two good looks in the last couple minutes, but a shot from Kit Ross went left and another from Julia Igoe drifted left, as well.

George Fox held a 20-8 advantage in shots for the game and Freiberg made saves on eight of those shots.

The Ladies, now 1-2 overall, will remain at home to take on a powerful Calvin College team Friday at 5:15 p.m.
