Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ladies nearly knock off Yeowomen

OBERLIN, Ohio -- It took an overtime period, two buzzer-beaters and a last-second lucky bounce, but the Oberlin College women's basketball team survived a scare from the underdog Kenyon College Ladies and escaped Philips Gymnasium with a 77-75 North Coast Athletic Conference win Saturday.

With the narrow win, Oberlin exited with a 12-1 record, including a spotless 9-0 mark at home. The tough loss for the Ladies dropped their record to 3-12 overall.

In overtime with the score at 75-75, Oberlin came out of a timeout with the ball and 32.6 seconds remaining. The Yeowomen milked the clock and passed the ball down low to Kendal McCall. McCall was quickly stripped of the ball, but it rolled right to the feet of Camille Zinaich, who put up a shot at the free throw line with about two seconds left. Zinaich's shot went off the front of the rim and deflected off an Oberlin player trying to grab the rebound. The deflection went back to McCall, who was just getting up off the floor after previously losing the ball. In the middle of the lane, McCall gathered herself and heaved a shot that found its mark just as the final buzzer sounded.

Prior to overtime, Kenyon held a 64-60 advantage with 1:47 left in regulation. Oberlin's Gina Lombard closed the gap with a three-pointer and Bryana Woodard tied things up with a free throw. Madelyn Anderson then drilled two free throws for Kenyon with 13 seconds left. After an Oberlin turnover and foul, Katie Orefice tacked on another Kenyon free throw for a 67-64 lead with three ticks left on the clock.

Following a timeout, the Yeowomen inbounded the ball and got it to Sammy Spanier on the left wing. Spanier snapped in a three-pointer as time expired, setting up the extra period.

The two buzzer-beaters were tough to swallow for the Ladies, who held the lead for more than 37 minutes of the 45 minutes played.

Oberlin did most of its damage at close range. The Yeowomen shot 54.4 percent for the game and outscored Kenyon 44-22 in the paint. On the flip side, Kenyon did a great job of driving and drawing fouls. The Ladies drew 20 Oberlin fouls and turned them into a 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) showing at the free throw line.

Orefice was 9-of-12 at the charity stripe and led all scorers with 25 points. She also snared a team-high nine rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals. Greta Propp tallied a career-high 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Anderson matched those 14 points. Claudia Cooke added a 7-of-8 performance at the line and finished with 13 points.

Zinaich shouldered a big load for the Yeowomen and finished the game with a triple-double that included 21 points, 16 rebounds and 13 assists. Woodard, Lombard, Spanier and McCall all added double-digit scoring totals for Oberlin.
The Ladies will now look ahead to their next game, which will take place Wednesday at Hiram College.
