Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Gators escape Lords

GAMBIER, Ohio – Following the women's nail biter against Allegheny College, the Kenyon College men's basketball team faced off against Allegheny's men. The Lords attempted to mount a comeback in the final minutes, but the Gators escaped Gambier with an 85-80 road win. The Lords fall to 2-14 overall and 0-9 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Lords came out red-hot from the opening tip starting the game on a 13-0 run. The Gators' first made bucket of the game didn't come until the 16:38 mark. Kenyon continued to make shots and extend their lead. Juan Sergio Matabuena converted his shot from beyond the arc, forcing Allegheny to take a timeout with the Lords up 26-12. Following their timeout, the Gators responded with a 15-3 run over the next 4:21. The Lords took a timeout of their own with 5:42 left in the first half after Jordan Greynolds hit a three-pointer. With just over two minutes remaining in the half Nick Lewis connected from deep to give the Lords a 41-40 lead. As the clock ticked down, Brian Roberts Jr. found space to put the Gators up 50-46 going into halftime.

Coming out of the locker room, David Mazon drove down the lane and pulled up, giving the Lords their first points in the second half. The Lords kept the Gator lead to single digits until a short 6-0 run by Allegheny. The Gators gained their largest lead of the game on a Brian Roberts Jr. three-pointer to make the score 74-62 with 7:32 remaining in the game. Driving down the lane, Alex Boyd finished his shot through contact to bring Kenyon within single digits once again.

In the final two minutes of the game, both teams made free throws to keep things interesting. Nick Lewis sank a shot from the corner to cut the Allegheny lead down to three. After an Allegheny miss, the Lords looked to tie the game up but missed the tying shot. Following an offensive rebound and timeout, Allegheny fouled Kenyon to force the Lords to shoot one-and-one. Kenyon missed the tying shot once again with seven seconds, sending Roberts Jr. to the line for two free throws.

Kenyon returns to action on Monday as Denison University visits Tomsich Arena for a 7:30 tip.
