Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Lucien Kisch

Tigers shut down Lords

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's basketball team were unable to end their six game losing streak on Senior Day this Saturday, falling 81-50 to the DePauw University Tigers. The loss dropped the Lords' record  to 2-16 for the season.

The Tigers took an early lead and never looked back. However, it was still a memorable day for the Lords and their three seniors, who have all left a big mark on the program.

The Lords went with an unfamiliar starting lineup featuring all of the team's seniors: Chrisitan Wantanabe, Elijah Fiedman, and Konrad Christian. Despite that unit going down 7-2, the Lords fought back and went on a 9-2 run of their own, giving them an 11-9 lead after a Nick Lewis steal turned into a Dylan Osimetha bucket. That would be the last time that Kenyon held a lead in the game.

The Lords kept things relatively close for the opening part of the first half, only trailing 20-17 with ten minutes to go. But the Tigers began to kick into a higher gear from there on out, finishing the half on a 20-6 run. The Lords struggled with their shot during that stretch, shooting just 3-13 from the field, including 0-4 from behind the arc. At halftime, Kenyon faced a 40-23 deficit.

DePauw continued to stay in the driver's seat, in no small part due to their ability to get to the free throw line. The Tigers took 16 shots from the charity stripe during the second half, making 14 of them. In contrast, the Lords only had nine free-throw attempts and made just four of them. The Lords also struggled shooting from long range all game, making just 20 percent (5-25) of their three-point attempts. This allowed the Tigers to never look back and take the game 81-50.

DePauw's Elijah Hales led all scorers with 27 points. Fittingly for the senior day game, Christian led all Lords in scoring with 11 points on very efficient 4-7 shooting from the floor while making three of four free-throw attempts. It was only the third game of the season where the senior made an appearance, but he certainly made his presence felt. Sophomore Drew Valentino also impressed, scoring seven points and grabbing a game-high seven boards in just eleven minutes of action. Anthony Testa chipped in nine points, leading the team with three three-pointers.

The Lords' next chance to get back into the win column is on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at home against The College of Wooster. The game tips off at 7 p.m. in Tomsich Arena.
