Kenyon opens conference play by downing DePauw

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Junior Lindsey Abramson had 14 kills and senior Paige Milhon racked up 11 blocks, as the Kenyon College volleyball team opened North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a five-set home win against DePauw University.

Kenyon dropped the first set to the Tigers, 25-22, but bounced back in the next two, chalking up victories of 25-23 and 25-18. DePauw took the fourth, 25-21, and then the Owls put things away with a 15-8 win in the fifth and deciding set.

The second-set win was key for Kenyon as it changed the momentum of the entire match. A 7-1 DePauw run in the middle of that set gave the Tigers a 17-10 lead. That margin stayed pretty much the same, as DePauw forged ahead with leads of 21-15 and 23-17.

It was at that point that Kenyon reeled off eight consecutive points to steal the set and take the wind of the Tigers. During that span, the Owls got three blocks from Milhon, who was assisted by Maggie Wolf on two of them.

Early in the third set, DePauw tied Kenyon on three different occasions, but when the Owls moved ahead 5-4, they never relinquished the lead and DePauw never got closer than three points the rest of the way.

The Tigers turned things around in the fourth set, erasing a 14-6 Kenyon advantage by going on an 11-3 run that tied things at 17. Kenyon got the next two points, but DePauw closed the set by scoring eight of the last ten points.

In the final set, Kenyon started with kills from Milhon and Eras Yager. Those, combined with three DePauw errors, pushed the Owls out to a 5-2 lead. Later, three consecutive Kenyon errors put DePauw in front, 8-6.

When the teams switched court sides, the new view was all Kenyon needed. Topping the eight straight points to close out the second set, the Owls strung together nine in a row to seal the match win. In that final run, first-year Rebecca Gwynne served up two aces and Abramson smashed five kills.

Abramson's 14 kills on the day were a new career high. She also had five digs and two blocks. Milhon's 11 blocks were also a career-high and just one block off the Kenyon five-set match record of 12 blocks set by Judy Hruska in 1988. Milhon, who also had eight kills against DePauw, leads Kenyon, as well as the NCAC, with 55 blocks and an average of 1.10 blocks per set.

Wolf, although just nine matches into her collegiate career, set a personal-high with 31 assists. She also contributed 13 digs and watched her classmate, Elizabeth Sonza, post a game-high 19 digs.

In addition to clutch serving in the fifth set, Gwynne rounded out her stat line with eight kills, three aces and a dozen digs.
