Five Owls garner goals for No. 3 Kenyon

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's soccer team, the No. 3-ranked squad in the nation, added to its impressive resume with a 5-0 road win over Oberlin College (4-6-1, 0-3-1). Five different Owls tallied goals to give Kenyon an 11-0-1 record and improve to 3-0-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Kenyon kept the pressure on Oberlin's side early, taking four shots and earning three corners without conceding any offensive statistics to the Yeomen through 16 minutes. After a few minutes where the Owls were forced to defend their half of the pitch, Kenyon pressed hard in the 19th minute.

The Owls earned a corner that led to an on-target header, but the shot was saved. Kenyon repeated the sequence with a corner kick and a header midway through the 21st minute. Though Scott Upton's initial attempt was blocked, the senior earned an assist after junior Aidan Burns knocked in his second goal in as many games, giving Kenyon a 1-0 lead at the 20:44 mark.

Oberlin took the game's next two shots, but Kenyon's Jack Pedreschi, a sophomore, saved the only on-goal threat. After some physical play interrupted the action, the Owls broke free in the 40th minute and earned a free kick just outside the Oberlin box. Johan Johannsson, a senior, crossed the free kick to sophomore Eamon Dujakovich, who headed the ball to the front of the goal, where first-year defender Matt Nguyen finished the sequence with a score that put Kenyon up 2-0.

The Owls almost added to their lead twice before the end of the first half. Alem Duratovic broke free and had a one-on-one with the Oberlin goalie in the 44th minute, but Colvin Iorio made a sliding save. Then, just before the horn, Atli Hrafnkelsson received a great cross from senior Aidan Schoellkopf and had a clean look, but the shot sailed wide as the half ended. Through 45 minutes, Kenyon out-shot Oberlin 11-2, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal, and earned six corners while conceding none.

Nguyen nearly notched a second goal on the second half's first shot after a long throw-in that led to a loose ball in the Oberlin box, but the shot was swallowed by Iorio.

After being called offside in the 52nd minute, the Owls got their easiest goal of the night in the 54th minute. Upton headed a longball past the last Yeomen defender, and Sam Carson stayed onside and collected the ball with only him, teammate Sebastian Gaese, and the Yeomen keeper in view. Carson dribbled close and made the goalie commit before tapping an easy pass to Gaese, who finished the run and gave the No. 3-ranked Owls a 3-0 lead.

Oberlin had a great look in the 58th minute after Upton was issued a yellow card on Kenyon's half of the pitch. The ensuing free kick led to a strong Yeomen shot that was blocked before Pedreschi was pressed into action on the rebound, making a save on an open look from the other side of the net.

A minute later, Kenyon's offense turned the would-be Oberlin goal into an attack of their own after Carson, a senior, raced downfield and dispossessed the deepest Yeomen defender, leading to a one-on-one with the keeper. Carson kept his cool and collected his fourth goal of the season, putting Kenyon ahead 4-0.

The Owls did not rest on their laurels, making numerous fantastic attacks and aggressive presses, including a handful of dangerous shots from Hrafnkelsson, among others. Kenyon's reserves increased the advantage in the 87th minute when Jacob Lazarus, a sophomore, showed off his speed and sliced through the Oberlin defense to score his first goal of the year and put the cherry on top of Kenyon's 5-0 win. Overall, the Owls held a 26-7 edge in shots, a 12-3 margin in shots on goal, and took 10 corners while allowing zero.

The No. 3 Owls head back to Gambier to host DePauw University on Saturday, Oct. 15. The match is set for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Mavec Field following a women's soccer match over Kenyon's Parents Weekend.
