Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Lucien Kisch

Owls remain unbeaten with 2-0 win over Tigers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's soccer team came through when it mattered in Saturday's hard fought 2-0 win against the DePauw University Tigers. The No. 3-ranked Owls defense was exceptional and their offense was opportunistic enough to cash in on a couple opportunities.

The Owls controlled the pace of the game from the start, taking three shots and three corners, in just the game's first twelve minutes. Kenyon finally cashed in on an opportunity in the 13th minute. Aidan Burns made a throw-in near the goal that Sebastian Gaese headed out of a scrum. Eamon Dujakovich was able to connect with Gaese's header, volleying the ball to the back left corner, just past the reach of Tigers' goalkeeper Alexander Lundin to put the Owls up 1-0.

While Kenyon did not score again in the first half, the game felt very much in their control. The Owls kept the ball in their attacking zone for much of the half. For the half, they took 15 shots, including six on goals, compared to only two from DePauw. The Owls also took six corners compared to just three from the Tigers and kept their fouling to a minimum; DePauw committed seven during the half and allowed numerous free kicks as a consequence. The Kenyon defense was a major factor in the Owls strong first half, keeping the DePauw counters to a minimum.

The second half started as more of the same for Kenyon, with the Owls being the more aggressive team, but unable to convert on either of their first four shots. However, in the 73rd minute, Kenyon was finally able to convert. Luke Muther poked the ball free around midfield and Joey Martens made a long run down the field. Martens then passed off to Atli Hrafnkelsson, who sent a low cross across the box. As it neared the middle of the box, Alem Duratovic redirected it into the net, giving the Owls an insurance goal.

With the Owls stellar defense continuing to limit the Tigers on the other end, DePauw was never able to totally get into an offensive rhythm. The Tigers also committed eleven more fouls during the half, frequently giving the Owls possession.

At the back end of the defense, Jack Pedreschi made three saves in the second half, giving him four for the game, as well as his sixth shutout of the season.

The win moved Kenyon to 12-0-1 on the season, including 4-0-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play. The Owls will look to continue their stellar season at home on Wednesday, October 19 when they take on the Denison University Big Red at 3:30 p.m.
