Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Kenyon drops 1-0 decision at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio -- In a rematch of last year's North Coast Athletic Conference championship game, the Kenyon College field hockey team was consistently tested by the Ohio Wesleyan University offense, which finally broke through in the fourth quarter and held on for a rain-soaked 1-0 conference win.

The game, played in a steady downpour, was delayed 30 minutes at the start because of lighting and then delayed again for another 30 minutes with just 7:05 remaining.

Between the delays, pressure from the Ohio Wesleyan offense proved to be the deciding factor. The host Battling Bishops racked up a 29-6 count in shots taken, as well as a 17-6 margin in penalty corners.

It was during one of those penalty corners that Ohio Wesleyan (10-2, 3-1 NCAC) scored the game's lone goal. With 9:46 left on the fourth-quarter clock, the Battling Bishops inserted the corner. The initial shot was a weak one deflected by a Kenyon defender, but it also made Kenyon goalkeeper Megan Lydon move up to challenge. As she did, the deflected shot bounced over to Ohio Wesleyan's Emily Streeter, who whipped her shot past Lydon and into the lower right corner of the Kenyon cage.

After the second lightning delay, Kenyon (6-6, 1-3 NCAC) tallied three of its six penalty corners in the game's final. The Owls, however, generated just one shot on those three attempts.

Back in the first quarter, Kenyon had two shots, one blocked and one saved. In the second quarter, it had three shots. The second of those three was, arguably, the team's best chance to score. It came off a penalty corner and resulted in a big shot from Carolyn Herbosa. However, Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper, Meg McCarthy, was in a good position to make the save.

McCarthy made just two saves in the game, while Lydon made six for Kenyon.

Next up for the Owls is a Sunday home game against Wittenberg University. That conference contest is slated to start at noon.
