WOOSTER, Ohio -- For the second game in a row, the Kenyon College women's soccer team was outshot by an opponent, but not outscored. Wednesday at The College of Wooster, the Owls recorded a 1-1 tie with the Fighting Scots while extending their unbeaten streak to four games.
With the result, Kenyon moved to 3-4-4 overall and 1-0-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. On the other side of the field, Wooster's records changed to 6-4-3 overall and 1-1-1 in NCAC action.
Wooster posted a 22-8 advantage in shots throughout Wednesday's game, but the Kenyon defense and goalkeeper
Leah Anderson, who made six saves, held up.
Kenyon managed just one shot during the first 45 minutes of play. It occurred in the game's 31st minute and the Owls made it count. Following a throw-in near midfield, Alex Sokolik corralled a misplayed pass near the penalty arc. She then tapped a short pass to her right, where Sadie Gould was standing. Gould settled the ball with her right foot and then lobbed a shot over the Wooster goalkeeper's head and into the left side of the net.
The goal was Gould's second of the season and the assist was Sokolik's first.
Wooster, on the other hand, fired nine shots and earned seven corners during the first 45 minutes of competition. Anderson made four saves in the half, while the other five Wooster shots were off target.
The persistence of the Fighting Scots offense paid off early in the second half. A little more than seven minutes in, Teddi Farson took an uncontested shot from the right side, about ten yards out. Anderson drove to her right to make the save. She did so, but the rebound trickled to Emma Jaros, who had a clear shot into the back of the Kenyon net.
Roughly ten minutes later, Kenyon had a great opportunity to regain the lead with Jenna Michel controlling the ball in the Wooster box. Moving left to right, Michel uncorked one shot, but it was blocked by a defender. Michel regained possession, moved farther to her right, and let another shot go, only to have it blocked by another defender.
In the game's final minutes, both teams had chances to win it. In the 85th minute, Farson ripped a Wooster shot that went just wide left. In the 88th minute, Kenyon's
Chloe Webb raced to a loose ball in the box, but got there a step late, kicking it right into the Wooster keeper's hands. Then, with just 42 seconds left in the game, Wooster had its best chance. A point-blank shot from Farson, who was in the goal box, was booted too far right.
Kenyon, which is 1-1-4 in road games, returns to Mavec Field on Saturday for its next opponent, the DePauw University Tigers.
