Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

DePauw scores second-half goal to edge Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio - Suffering just its second home loss of the season, the Kenyon College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the visiting DePauw University Tigers on Saturday at Mavc Field.

DePauw tallied the game's lone goal in the 23rd minute. The score developed off an errant Kenyon pass that ended up at the feet of DePauw's Sydney Calisto, who beat one Kenyon defender and moved toward the box. She passed ahead to Jess Purtee, who moved to her right, cut back to her left to avoid another Kenyon defender, and took a left-footed shot that found its way through two more defenders and into the left side of the Kenyon goal.

The Tigers outshot the Owls 6-3 in the first half and 7-4 in the second half. Six DePauw shots were on goal, four of Kenyon's were on goal.

Late in the game, Kenyon had its best chance to tie things up. In the 79th minute, a pass through the middle freed Talulla Sheridan, who had just Emma St. John, the DePauw goalkeeper, to beat. St. John, however, sprinted a good way out of the box and clipped Sheridan, sending her to the ground. The officials gave St. John a red card, forcing the Tigers to play a man down for the final 10 minutes. The foul was outside the box, so no penalty kick was awarded.

Over those final 10 minutes of play, Kenyon kept the pressure on, but only generated one shot before time expired.

Aside from letting the one goal in, Kenyon goalkeeper Leah Anderson had a solid game, making five saves for the Owls.

The loss dropped Kenyon's overall record to 3-5-4 and its North Coast Athletic Conference mark to 1-1-1. The loss was the Owls' first in their last five games. On the other sideline, DePauw used the win to improve to 7-3-3 overall and 2-1-0 in the NCAC.

Next up for the Owls will be a conference road game at Oberlin College. That match is slated for a 7 pm start Tuesday.
