Kenyon falls in straight sets to No. 11 Wittenberg

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team was handed a 3-0 loss at home by Wittenberg University (16-3, 4-0 NCAC), the No. 11-ranked team in the nation. Despite improving in each set, the Owls fell 25-8, 25-11, 25-17 and fell to 3-16 and 1-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Wittenberg set the tone early with a 25-8 win in set one that included a 13-point run. The Owls strung together two points at 10-6, but the Tigers closed out the opening set behind a stellar .406 hitting percentage while holding the Owls to a .000 clip.

Kenyon faced a 17-3 deficit in set two, but the team showed some fight with a 6-2 run. The Owls led 3-2 in the third set and kept it close with a 16-13 deficit, but the home team could not tame the Tigers.

The visitors got less efficient in each of the ensuing sets, hitting .281 and .273. However, Kenyon could not capitalize, hitting -.088 and -.030 to finish the match with a -.042 mark. Overall, Wittenberg notched 39 kills and committed eight errors, while Kenyon had 20 errors and 16 kills.

Senior Eras Yager led Kenyon with a .267 hitting percentage and 5.5 points thanks to five kills and a block assist. Senior Macy Reimbold also tallied five kills, junior Lindsey Abramson notched four, and senior Paige Milhon had two. Elizabeth Sonza, a first-year, led the Owls with nine digs, while Reimbold and seniors Lizzie Sunding and Maya Sapsford finished with eight apiece. Senior Jac Cousineau dished out nine assists while adding five digs and an ace.

The Owls hit the road for a mid-week game against the College of Wooster on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. Kenyon's final home game comes against Oberlin College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, when the Owls celebrate senior day in Gambier.
