Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Lucien Kisch

Owls defense secures 1-0 win at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio -- On a cold and drizzling Tuesday evening, the Kenyon College women's soccer team came away with a narrow road victory, securing a 1-0 win over the Oberlin College Yeowomen. It was a stellar defensive performance from the Owls, with just enough offense to squeeze by.

The first half of the game was a defensive battle, with both sides struggling to get into an offensive rhythm. Neither team was able to generate a lot of clean looks at goal, forcing tough shots and a lot of misfires. While the Owls opened the half as the team applying more pressure, the Yeowomen continued to attack, taking the final four shots of the half. None of them, however, were on goal, leaving Owls goalie Leah Anderson without a single save attempt during the half. Kenyon only had one shot on goal for the half on Morgan Baker's 27th minute attempt, but Oberlin goalkeeper Benji Maddox made the stop to keep the game scoreless.

Oberlin came out of halftime ready to attack. Within the first four minutes the Yeowomen had their cleanest look on goal all game, with Heather Benway finding a crack through the center of the Owls defense. Her shot, however, rolled right at Anderson who made the save. Kenyon had a great chance of its own to get on the scoreboard five minutes afterward, but Jenna Michel's shot on goal off after a corner was also saved.

A blocked Owls shot in the 61st minute earned Kenyon a corner kick, their seventh of the match. Baker took the corner and crossed it to the middle where Sadie Gould rose up and knocked a header into the upper left corner of the net for an Owls goal. The breakthrough gave Kenyon a 1-0 advantage.

The Owls defense continued to be tested, but it held firm against the Yeowomen attack. During the second half, Oberlin took eight total shots, but the Kenyon defense prevented any dangerous opportunities from developing. When the final whistle blew, Kenyon had completed the 1-0 shutout victory.

Claudia Abram, Kit Ross, and Jackie Thompson all played the full game for the Owls defense, helping the backline hold strong and maintaining the clean sheet. Baker's steadying presence in the midfield was also crucial throughout the game, helping to pilot the Kenyon offense down the field. She also had the assist on Gould's header, the lone goal of the game.

With the win Kenyon improved to 4-5-4 on the season and to 2-1-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play. The Owls will play their next game on the road again, heading to Hiram College to face the Terriers in another NCAC showdown on Saturday, October 22. The game kicks off at 4:30 p.m.
