Owls end regular season with two road bouts

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team wrapped up its regular-season slate with a pair of losses on the road. The Owls traveled to University Heights, Ohio, to take on Muskingum University (17-7, 5-4 OAC) and tri-match hosts John Carroll University (20-7, 6-3 OAC), falling 3-1 in each bout.

In their first match of the day against the Muskies, Kenyon fell 25-14, 23-25, 25-12, 25-18, before falling 25-12, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16 against the Blue Streaks. Both matches had very similar statistics: the Owls were outscored 69-47 in match one before a 69-41 deficit in game two. The similarities continued as Muskingum held a 52-36 edge in kills while JCU's advantage was 52-32, and aces were similar with 9-5 and 11-5 disadvantages, respectively. Muskingum outhit Kenyon .208 to .068, while John Carroll outhit Kenyon .287 to .074.

After dropping their first set of the day, Kenyon bounced back with a 25-23 win in set two against the Muskies. The Owls led 12-6 before a 9-2 Muskingum run put Kenyon down by two at 16-14, but the Owls battled back to take the set. Rebecca Gwynne, a first-year, recorded the clinching kill en route to leading Kenyon's offensive attack in match one.

Gwynne paced the Owls with 10 kills and a .240 hitting percentage against Muskingum, edging out senior Paige Milhon's nine kills and .227 clip for the team lead. First-year Maggie Wolf led the Owls with 17 assists, while senior Jac Cousineau notched a double-double after finishing second in assists (14) and digs (10). Elizabeth Sonza, a first-year, led Kenyon with 21 digs.

Against John Carroll, the Owls had to stave off a sweep with a win in the third set. After hitting -.087 and .000 in the first two frames, Kenyon hit .182 in set three en route to a 25-22 win. The Owls jumped out to a 16-9 lead thanks to four kills from Gwynne, three from senior Macy Reimbold, and two from first-year Kathryn McCaffrey. A 9-3 stretch from the Blue Streaks cut Kenyon's lead to one at 19-18, but the Owls closed out the set to secure the three-point win.

Gwynne led Kenyon with 13 kills against JCU, hitting an efficient .310. Reimbold racked up nine kills on a .152 clip, while McCaffrey managed seven kills while hitting .200.
