Owls can’t overcome early deficit against DePauw

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Two second-quarter goals propelled the DePauw University Tigers to a 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory over the Kenyon College field hockey team Saturday on The Field at Benson Bowl.

The loss dropped Kenyon to a 5-5 overall record, as well as an 0-2 mark within conference play. DePauw, winners of three in a row, moved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in NCAC action.

After a fairly quiet first quarter, DePauw kicked things into gear, scoring twice in the second quarter. The first of those two goals came off a penalty corner, as Lilly Harris gathered in the ball outside the circle, passed to her left and watched as teammate Margaret Volpe fired her shot into the left side of the Kenyon cage.

About four minutes later, Harris doubled the DePauw advantage. When Volpe let a shot loose from the right side it was blocked by a Kenyon defender. The rebound, however, bounced right to Harris, who flipped her shot past Kenyon keeper Payton Doan.

The third quarter did not hold much action, but Kenyon showed some resilience in the fourth. The Owls remained in the offensensive zone for quite some time, racking up a couple shots and a couple penalty corners.

With just 1:56 left in the game, the Owls finally broke through. Grace Lane intercepted a DePauw clearing pass, drove the other way and drew a foul. On the restart, she moved to the top of the circle, where she reached back and ripped a shot on goal. On the way, the ball was deflected by Kiersten Hoffmann, who steered it over the goal line to record her second score of the season. The assist from Lane was her first of the year and gave her a team-leading seven points on the season.

The Kenyon momentum was short-lived, though. Less than one minute later, DePauw tacked on an insurance goal from Amy Apfelbaum to seal the game result.

Overall, DePauw held a slight edge in shots (10-8), while Kenyon had the advantage in the corners (5-2).

The Owls go right back to work tomorrow, returning to The Field at Benson Bowl for another noon NCAC contest. This time against winless Earlham College (0-11).
