Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Quakers deal Owls first loss of the season

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Senior swingman Abdul Kanu scored 25 points and led the host Wilmington College Quakers to an 82-74 non-conference win over the Kenyon College Owls in men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

Kanu went 6-of-7 for 12 points in the first half and then went 5-of-6 with three free throws in the second half. He also had eight rebounds and a couple assists to lead Wilmington, which improved to 3-1 with the win.

Kenyon, which now owns a 3-1 record, too, got a team-high 17 points from sophomore guard Miles Versa. He was 7-of-16 from the field, 2-of-3 at the free throw line and did his part on defense, racking up five steals.

The game was close throughout and featured eight lead changes and six tied scores.

In the early stages, Wilmington jumped ahead 22-15 on a jumper from Kanu. Kenyon, steered by Gefen Bar-Cohen and Nick Lewis, responded with an 11-4 run to tie up the contest at 26-26 with 6:29 left on the first-half clock. During the Owls' run, Bar-Cohen scored seven points and Lewis scored four.

The Quakers inched ahead by six points two more times before the half, but a couple of free throws from Bar-Cohen made it 39-35 in Wilmington's favor at the half.

Kanu then lifted the Quakers to a 10-point lead early in the second half, but Kenyon again chipped away and cut its deficit to three with a layup from David Mazon III and then down to two with a layup from Bar-Cohen.

At the 11:18 mark, a free throw from Lewis gave Kenyon a 54-53 advantage. The teams went-back-and-forth for the next few minutes and, around the 4:19 mark, found themselves tied at 69-69.

Over the last four minutes of play, Wilmington took over. Kanu and Bryce Bird combined for eight of the Quakers' final 13 points as they closed out the game on a 13-5 run.

Although the Owls kept the game close, they shot themselves in the foot when it came to free throws. At the stripe, the Owls were just 20-of-32 (62.5 percent).

Bar-Cohen finished the game with 14 points and six rebounds, while Lewis tacked on 13 points and a team-high seven boards.

The Owls will keep moving west over the weekend and will play their next game on Monday night at Grinnell College in Iowa.
