Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls start season with win at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Anthony Testa scored a game-high 19 points and David Mazon III posted a double-double to guide the Kenyon College men's basketball team to a 71-54 season-opening victory at Waynesburg University on Tuesday night.

Testa scored the bulk of his points from long range, where he was 5-of-8. Overall, he was 7-of-12 from the floor and the 19-point output was a career high for the junior, who's played 20 games in a Kenyon uniform.

Mazon, a sophomore, matched his career high with a dozen rebounds. He also tossed in ten points to post the second double-double of his college career.

Mazon's classmate, Gefen Bar-Cohen, nearly had a double-double, as well. He poured in 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He shot 5-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 at the line. Additionally, Bar-Cohen's stat line included three assists, a block and a steal.

The game's first half was closely contested and it wasn't until there was 2:43 remaining that the Owls took the lead for good. Following two free throws and a field goal from Bar-Cohen, Waynesburg's Matt Popeck drained a three-pointer to knot the game at 28-28.

About 40 seconds later, Drew Valentino got a steal and a fast-break layup to give Kenyon a 30-28 advantage. Bar-Cohen copied what Valentino did and then Mazon sank a three-pointer to put Kenyon ahead 35-28. Waynesburg went on to score the last bucket of the half, but its five-point difference would be as close as it would get for the rest of the game.

The turning point came about five minutes into the second half, as another Bar-Cohen layup ignited a 21-2 run for Kenyon. Bar-Cohen scored five more points after that layup and was followed up by free throws from Nick Nelson and a pair of three-pointers from Testa. Mazon also chipped in with a three-ball and a free throw from Jackson Kennedy extended the Owls' lead to 24 points, at 64-40 with 8:32 left on the clock.

Waynesburg never got closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

Throughout the contest, Kenyon's transition game was flowing smoothly, as the Owls posted 15 points off turnovers and 13 fast-break points.

Kenyon shot 39.4 percent overall (26-of-66), while Waynesburg fired at 36.8 percent (21-of-57). The difference came from outside the arc, where Kenyon shot 34.4 percent (11-of-32) and Waynesburg shot 22.2 percent (2-of-9).

Next up for the Owls will be their home opener on Monday. They take on Earlham College at 7 p.m. in Tomsich Arena.
