Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls complete remarkable comeback at Alma

ALMA, Mich. -- A layup from Miles Versa with five seconds left in Saturday evening's men's basketball game completed a massive Kenyon College comeback and gave the visiting Owls a 74-72 non-conference victory against the Alma College Scots.

Kenyon did not get off to the start it wanted, shooting 23.3 percent (7-of-30) in the first half and falling behind by 18 points, 39-21, at halftime.

When the second half started, the Owls quickly left those first-half stats behind. Within the first three minutes of the second stanza, Kenyon cut its deficit in half by whipping up a 9-0 run. Anthony Testa started the run with a three-pointer. Versa and David Mazon III then dropped in field goals and Gefen Bar-Cohen sank two free throws.

Alma answered and boosted its lead back to 12, but momentum was clearly on Kenyon's side. Bar-Cohen proved that by completing a three-point play and then sinking a layup during the return trip down the court. About 20 seconds later, Bar-Cohen sank another free throw and pulled the Owls within four points, 48-44, with 13:55 still on the clock.

The host Scots maintained a slim lead for the next eight minutes, but a Mazon three-pointer with 5:58 left knotted the game at 63-63. Half a minute later, Testa drained a free throw to put the Owls ahead by a point.

With 2:29 left, Alma tied the game up again, this time at 70-70. Bar-Cohen went to work in the paint again to give Kenyon a two-point edge, but Alma got two free throws from Tyshaun Walker, making the score 72-72 with 1:07 on the clock.

After both teams misfired on their next possessions, Kenyon took the ball and called a timeout with 20 seconds left. When play resumed, Versa handled the ball on the left wing, drove around the right side and floated a layup off the glass and in with five seconds left.

Alma, which fell to 3-4 with the loss, had one last opportunity to tie or win, but Nick Nelson came up with a steal to seal the Kenyon win.

Versa ended the game with 13 points and three assists. Mazon went 3-for-3 from long range, scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Bar-Cohen led all scorers with 24 points and also had a game-high 10 boards.

The victory ended a quick three-game skid for Kenyon and bumped the Owls' overall record to 6-4. The six wins already doubled last year's win output and match the win total from the 2019-20 season.

The Owls will now head to Florida to participate in the Daytona Beach Shootout. They'll take on Stevenson University on Tuesday and then Marymount University on Wednesday.
