Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spartans dominate second half to top Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team survived a strong first half from the Kenyon College Owls and then went on a roll in the second half to claim a 77-53 non-conference win Friday night at Tomsich Arena.

Kenyon, paced by a game-high 16 points from first-year Alyssa Gest, ran stride-for-stride with the Spartans in the first half.

The Owls built an early 7-3 lead after Gest's first three-pointer of the game snapped twine. Case then charged back and went ahead by three toward the end of the quarter. Katie Orefice followed up by knocking down a jumper with 34 seconds left to reduce Kenyon's deficit to one, but Case got a three-pointer from Lucy Vanderbeck to pull ahead 19-15 after the first ten minutes of play.

The second quarter was nearly identical to the first. Kenyon started it out on 4-0 run to tie the game, but Case responded by scoring the next nine points. Gest and teammate Claudia Cooke went to work and pulled the Owls back within four points. A Gest three-ball at the 2:34 mark made it 30-26 in favor of Case. Thirty-five seconds later, Gest drilled another long ball. Case answered with the final bucket of the half and went into intermission with a 34-29 lead.

From there, the Spartans took over the game. Kenyon got within three points during the third quarter, but an 11-3 run from the Spartans opened things up. Case held the Owls to a 2-of-11 (18.2 percent) shooting performance in the quarter and went ahead by as many as 14 points.

Kenyon never got closer than a dozen the rest of the way and Case built a lead as large as 28 points late in the game.

The Spartans did most of their damage down low, outscoring Kenyon 42-18 in the paint. Isabella Mills led the way for the visiting team by scoring 16. Kayla Characklis and Preet Gill each added 12 for the victors.

For Kenyon, Gest ended up 5-of-8 overall, including a 4-of-5 night from beyond the arc. She was 2-for-2 at the free throw line and also pitched in with a couple assists and a couple steals.

Fellow first-year Alexis Newman scored 10 for Kenyon, while Orefice, Cooke and Mikayla Rudolph each tossed in eight. Cooke also contributed a game-high 12 rebounds

The win bumped Case's record to 7-2, while the loss dropped Kenyon to 1-4. The Owls now look ahead to conference play, when they tip-off their NCAC opener at home against DePauw University on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
