Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nelson saves best for last in Kenyon triumph

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Kenyon College first-year Nick Nelson scored just three points in Wednesday's basketball game, but they were three most important points. All three were scored within the last 15 seconds and secured a 77-74 win for the Owls, who held off the Marymount University Saints during play in the Daytona Beach Shootout.

Using a balanced offensive attack, Kenyon built an early lead. Seven different players contributed to the team's point total through ten minutes of play, as the Owls manufactured a 22-12 advantage. After Marymount scored the first field goal of the game, David Mazon III canned a three-pointer that ignited a 13-0 Kenyon run, one that also saw Miles Versa and Kamal Aubakirov connect from long range.

Shortly after going up by double-digits ten minutes in, Kenyon upped its lead to 14 following a three-point play from Gefen Bar-Cohen with 8:14 still showing on the first-half clock. The difference dipped to nine a few minutes later, but the last field goal of the half was a three-pointer from Anthony Testa who gave the Owls a 39-24 lead at intermission.

Kenyon was 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from three-point territory in the first half. Mazon had 11 points in his first 15 minutes of work, while Bar-Cohen was 5-of-7 at the free throw line and tallied nine points by the half.

Meanwhile, the Kenyon defense was holding its own on the other end of the court. The Owls forced eight Marymount turnovers and flipped them into 15 points.

The Saints, however, cleaned things up in the second half and mounted a comeback. Within the first three minutes of the half, Marymount cut its deficit to seven points. About six minutes later, it was down to three.

Marymount kept charging and pulled to within one point three different times. Then, with 1:28 left in the game, the Saints took a lead when Ra'shwan Cook finished off a layup that put the Saints ahead 72-71.

Bar-Cohen converted a pair of free throws for Kenyon, but 15 seconds later, Stubbs gave Marymount another one-point lead with another layup.

When Kenyon (7-5) got the ball back, Marymount fouled Sam Walch, who hit one freebie to tie things up. When Walch missed his final attempt, Nelson was there to grab the important offensive rebound. He was quickly fouled and made a free throw to put Kenyon ahead 75-74.

When Marymount (4-7) took possession and moved the ball upcourt, Nelson was in place to make a steal and convert a layup at the other end with just eight ticks left.

The Saints were able to fire off a final three-pointer as time expired, but it missed its mark.

Bar-Cohen led Kenyon with 24 points and six rebounds. Mazon had 17 points and Versa chipped in with 11. In addition to his three points, Nelson contributed three rebounds and four assists.

The result was the final one of the calendar year for Kenyon, which is off to its best start, though a dozen contests, since the 2008-09 season.
