Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Lucien Kisch

Big Red pull away from Lords in second half

GAMBIER, Ohio – The crowd was amped up from the opening tip for the Kenyon College men's basketball team's Friday night game with rival the Denison University Big Red, but the Lords fell short in a tightly contested game. Despite a close first half, Big Red took control and defeated Kenyon, 77-55. The loss came despite a strong game from Miles Versa, who did his best to keep things competitive for the Lords.

The Big Red took an early lead thanks to knockdown shooting from Darren Rubin, who made his first three attempts from behind the arc as Denison took an 11-4 lead out of the gates. The Lords were able to close the gap to 11-10 before a 13-1 Denison run gave the Big Red a commanding 24-11 lead.

The Lords were down but not out and began to find some rhythm. David Mazon made his second trey of the evening before Drew Valentino got an and-one layup that got the crowd on their feet to cut the gap to 27-19.

Kenyon continued to cut into the Denison lead, with Versa starting to get into a groove. The first-year guard scored 11 points in a row for the Lords, nearly single handedly carrying the offensive load to keep Kenyon in the game. At the half the Lords were still down, but thanks to Versa's heroics they only trailed by five, 39-34.

The Lords struggled with their shot in the early going, shooting just 1-7 from the floor to start the half and falling down 52-38. The Big Red attack never relented, as the Lords struggled to gain any momentum offensively and Denison kept connecting on shots. For the half, Denison shot 40.6%. At the final whistle, Denison came out on top, 77-55.

For the game Versa had 23 points and four rebounds. No other Lord scored in double figures. Valentino led the team in rebounds with six while Max Belt dished out a team-high three assists. Mazon chipped in eight additional points.

The loss dropped the Lords to 2-20 on the season and 0-15 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Kenyon returns to action tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 12, for a rematch with Denison in Granville and a chance to record a win over a conference opponent. The game tips off at 3.pm.
